Charlestown Ladies exceed all
expectations in debut season.
Colin Rowe - Manager
We formed Charlestown Ladies football team last summer, the first time an adult
team has played under the Charlestown club name.
We competed in Division 2 of the Amity Cornwall Ladies Football league, where we
finished in second place, winning nine of their twelve fixtures, scoring 43 goals
and earning us promotion to Division 1 for next season.
We also won the Division 2 Kimmins Cup defeating Penzance Ladies, who had
finished above us in the league with a record of played twelve, won twelve.
As Charlestown Ladies manager I can only say what a phenomenal season we've
had, especially as we only have a small squad, eight of them stepping up with me
from our youth system, therefore just 16 years old at the start of
the campaign. The squad has worked exceedingly hard and always tried to play
football in the right manner - our team spirit is exceptional!
I would firstly like to thank my assistant Dave Leaity for running the line for
us and keeping the paperwork in order. Also my thanks goes to Sticker football
club who have allowed us to play our home fixtures at their excellent
facilities. Finally to our sponsor Ocean Housing and our family supports who
have cheered us on every step of the way.
I/we're are all looking forward to the challenge of Division 1 next season.

KIMMINS DIVISION 2 CUP FINAL
Charlestown Ladies 2 Penzance 1.
The Kimmins Cup Final saw an exciting end to end game at St.Agnes FC . Penzance,
with the wind in the first half always looked dangerous
with their direct play. However Charlestown had the first real opportunity with
a close range Kayleigh Clemes strike brilliantly pushed onto the post by the
Penzance keeper Grace Rudlin. Penzance continued to threaten but Charlestown
collectively defending very well to get to half-time 0-0.
Shortly into the second-half, Penzance brought on their top scorer Candice
Britten and within minutes she opened the scoring, latching onto a through ball
and shot pass the advancing keeper.
Charlestown were unperturbed, continued to play their passing football as they
took the game to Penzance. On 68 mins a defence splitting ball saw Sarah
Hawken breakaway on the angle before taking an early left footed short across
the keeper to equalise. Extra-time was looming as both sides battled to
break the 1-1 dead-lock. With ten minutes remaining Charlestown were
awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area and up stepped Hawken to give the
keeper no chance with a stunning strike. Charlestown could have sealed the game
with a third but had to see out the game with some resolute team play.

Division 2 Cup semi-final second leg
Camelford Ladies 1 Charlestown Ladies 1
Due to a rescheduled county U18 game on the initial second leg date the game was
reorganised for a Thursday evening KO at Bodmin FC, under floodlights.
Holding an 8 - 0 advantage after the first leg Charlestown reshuffled the
starting line and formation. Both sides started brightly, matching each other in
opportunities. Unfortunately Charlestown didn't have their shooting boots
on......and it was Camelford who took the lead on 20 mins through a Sian Osborne
goal, much to the delight of the players and supporting crowd. Charlestown
rallied and equalised in first half injury time with a Linden Reynolds
strike. The second half ended goaless but saw plenty of Charlestown pressure and
like the first half many missed chances. The evening ended in a draw but an
aggregate score of Camelford Ladies 1 Charlestown Ladies 9

Division 2 Cup semi-final first Leg
Charlestown Ladies 8 Camelford Ladies 0
Charlestown started brightly and were three goals
up inside the first ten minutes. Sarah Hawken started the scoring on 3
minutes when she shot high into the roof of the net after meeting a Linden
Reynolds through ball. On 8 minutes Jodie Bray collected the ball near the
half way line and ran through the Camelford defence shooting cleverly into the
far corner. Within a minute Nathalie Williams extended the lead when she
lobbed the Camelford keeper. The visitors came more into the game but a
long range shot from Kerri Vosper was the closest they came to troubling the
Charlestown keeper in the first half. On 30 minutes Bray added another
goal with a strong shot that beat the keeper on her near post. Charlestown
continued to dominate in the second half and extended their lead on 56 minutes.
A Camelford goal kick was headed back into the penalty area by Reynolds
where Hawken was on hand to smash the ball home. A Charlestown corner was
stabbed home by Rhiannon Player on 64 minutes and another corner was punched
into her own net by the Camelford keeper on 75 minutes. The Camels never
gave up and the midfield battle was fierce throughout the game. Camelford
came closest to scoring on 82 minutes when Silver Wheller cut in from the left
wing and her excellent shot was destined for the top corner until it was
brilliantly tipped over by the Charlestown keeper Abbie Pearce. The
resultant corner was collected by Pearce and her fast and accurate throw found
Hawken who turned and ran half the length of the pitch before shooting into the
corner of the net to complete the scoring. The second leg takes place at
Bodmin Football Ground on Thursday 23rd April with a 7:30pm kick off.

The day was rounded off by the great news that Callington had beaten St.Agnes in
the league thereby confirming CHARLESTOWN LADIES in 2nd place and promotion into
Division 1 for next season

Callington Ladies 1 Charlestown Ladies 4
Charlestown concluded their first season in
Ladies Division 2 with an exciting victory for the travelling supporters.
Callington, who had found some good form of late, started brightly, applying
good early pressure which saw the Charlestown defence line of Beth Dingle,
Stacey Rowe, Philippa Leaity, Nicola Rowe working hard and keeper Abbie
Pearce making several good saves. However, despite Callington's good possession
in the early exchanges, it was Charlestown that scored the first goal. An
ill-fated attempt to play the offside trap by the home defence resulted in the
ball running through to Linden Reynolds who fired a great shot into the far
corner from 20 yards. With the home side seemingly rocked by the goal, it only
took another five minutes before Reynolds grabbed her second of the match after
following up a parried Kayleigh Clemes shot. Callington pressed hard to get
themselves back into the game, and they nearly managed it on the half hour mark
when Kate Bourn's solo run from the right hand side ended in an excellent effort
which seemed to be heading for the top corner, before it was tipped over by the
in-form Charlestown keeper. Just before half time, Callington saw another effort
go agonisingly close, when Kate Lewis headed a Candy Caplin cross a foot wide of
the post.
The second half again saw Callington start strongly and within five minutes they
had Abbie Pearce bravely scrambling for the ball when a number of shots that
ricocheted off the legs of the Charlestown defenders in the six yard box.
Charlestown weathered the storm and slowly took control. The third goal came
when Callington were again undone by another Charlestown break. It was the
lively Sarah Hawkin this time who chased down a ball and managed to poke it
passed the home keeper, despite the close attention of Callington defender Marie
Wilson. The home side were given a lifeline when a pinpoint Katy Sheffield free
kick found striker Sam May who headed home from 10 yards. Going all out attack
for the remainder of the game meant that the home side started to leave gaps in
their defence and Charlestown put the game to bed when Charity Ternouth drove
the ball in from six yards to round off the scoring and earn the away side all
three points. The game saw excellent performances from Charlestown keeper Abbie
Pearce and Callington winger Kate Lewis.

Charlestown Ladies 2 St.Agnes Ladies 1
Sticker's Burngullow Park saw the eagerly awaited clash of the Division Two
second and third placed teams. In very blustery conditions Charlestown won the
toss and decided to kick with the advantage of the wind in the first half. A
decision which paid off immediately with the opening goal from Sarah Hawken with
less than two minutes on the clock. St.Agnes had limited possession of the ball
in the first half as Charlestown continued to press for more goals. The home
side had several opportunities, corners and goalmouth scrambles but to their
credit, the St.Agnes goalkeeper and defence held firm.
With the gale force wind continuing to blow, the second half started with
St.Agnes on the front foot, but Charlestown always looked threatening on the
counter attack. On 66 minutes St.Agnes were level when a through ball lead to a
mix up in the Charlestown defence and although the first shot was well saved by
the keeper the rebound was smashed into the net. The stalemate remained until
the 82nd minute when a Charlestown attack finally saw Hawken slip past the last
defender and coolly slot the ball past the keeper for her second goal.
Charlestown could have sealed the game minutes later but a Jodie Bray shot
crashed against the crossbar and away to safety. St. Agnes pushed again for an
equaliser in a frantic end to the game but Charlestown held on for a 2 - 1
victory. With this win Charlestown replaced St.Agnes, on goal difference, for
second place in the league. Both team have just two games remaining, so the
second promotion place is still up for grabs.

Camelford Ladies 1 Charlestown Ladies 2
Charlestown started brightly. With the wind at their backs they had the
ball in the net after only 8 minutes when Sarah Hawken ran onto a through ball
but it was ruled out as she was adjudged to be offside. On 13 minutes Hawken ran
onto a similar through ball and although on-side could only find the side
netting on this occasion. Camelford came more into the game and on the
half hour mark were awarded a free kick just outside the box after a trip. The
resultant strike was only just wide. Charlestown started the second half
just as they had the first and Micky Cushan shot just wide in the 46th minute.
Camelford with the advantage of the wind started to ask questions of the
Charlestown defence and won several corners although they never really created
any clear-cut opportunities. On 57 minutes Charlestown were awarded a free
kick on the edge of the box after a defender had handled. Sarah Hawken
took the kick and her shot flew into the top corner of the net. Charlestown
continued to pressure, and saw an action packed 68th minute as firstly Sarah hit
the post, from the resultant rebound Linden curled another shot against the
other post, before Jodie smashed the third attempt over the crossbar. Substitute
Charity Ternouth almost extended Charlestown's lead with her first touch but the
Camels keeper made a good save from her header. Almost immediately Jodie
Bray doubled the Charlestown lead with a strong left foot shot. Camelford
pushed forward and were right back in the game on 75 minutes when Nikki
Stevenson scored with a powerful long range shot that bounced over the Abbie
Pearce in goal. Charlestown had another disallowed goal when Sarah Hawken
was adjudged to have fouled the Camels defender. The final 10 minutes saw
Camelford increase the pressure on the Charlestown defence but they were able to
deal with everything thrown at them with Philippa Leaity and Stacey Rowe both
having outstanding game's at the heart of the Charlestown defence.

Charlestown Ladies 4 Holmans 1
Charlestown started brightly playing some neat football but it was Holmans who
took the lead on 14 minutes. Katy Luscombe broke clear and having shot
from distance saw the ball loop over goalkeeper Abbie Pearce. Charlestown
responded well and created plenty of chances. On 24 minutes Charity
Ternouth hit the post with a fierce drive. Three minutes later Jodie Bray
collected the ball on the half way line and with a strong run down the right
wing crossed for Micky Cushan to knock the ball home for her first goal of the
season and Charlestown's equaliser. The one way traffic continued, on 40
minutes, following a corner, Stacey Rowe scored to make it 2 -1 at half time.
In the second half Charlestown continued to control the game and extended their
lead on 62 minutes when Rhiannon Player steered the ball around the keeper into
the corner of the net. Holmans never gave up and created chances of their
own, none better than on 85 minutes when the a fierce Luscombe shot went just
wide of the post with the keeper beaten. Charlestown completed the scoring on 86
minutes when Linden Reynolds tapped in the ball after it rebounded off the
crossbar following a Nathalie Williams shot.

Penzance 2 Charlestown Ladies
1
Charlestown travelled to league leaders Penzance for their first game in nearly
two months. The opening period saw a very competitive tussle with Charlestown
playing some excellent football, while Penzance were always a threat with their
direct play and pace. Abbie Pearce thwarted Penzance with a string of superb
saves, before Charlestown took a 30th minute lead.
After some good build up play down the right the ball was crossing into the area
by Rhiannon Player, on the second attempt the ball was neatly slotted home by
Charity Ternouth.
Penzance then hit the bar before equalising on 39 minutes, with a crisp 25yard
shot.
The final action of the half saw Charlestown pressure result in a goal line
clearance by Penzance.
Penzance started the brighter of the two teams in the second half. Charlestown
found it difficult to retain the ball and had to work tirelessly in defence.
Abbie Pearce looked unbeatable in goal until 10 minutes from time when she
rushed out of her area to try a clear another over the top ball,
unfortunately the striker managed latch onto the ball and tried to loop the ball
over the keeper, Abbie's instinctive reaction was to save the ball with her
hands, all of which lead to the inevitable red card. The resultant free-kick saw
Charestown's new keeper Linden Reynolds parry the ball upwards from under
the crossbar, while trying to collect the ball again, Penzance conceded a free
kick as their attacker put the keeper and ball into the net!!.
On 88mins the ball broke for Penzance on the left hand side of the box and was
perfectly fired into the far corner of the net to win the game.
The final drama of the game came two minute into extra time when Charlestown
conceded a penalty. The spot-kick was well struck but brilliantly saved by the
stand in keeper
Charlestown Ladies again showed the never give up attitude and
commitment

St.Agnes Ladies 4 Charlestown Ladies 0
With the Charlestown home pitch at Sticker AFC unavailable St Agnes Ladies
offered to swap the fixture to a St Agnes home game hosted at, and with thanks
to, Goonhavern AFC.
St Agnes dominated the opening period and 15 minutes in Laura Rogers opened the
scoring as she effectively found the back of the net. St Agnes continued to
pressure and Laura Rogers made a fabulous individual run down the left hand side
of the pitch striking the ball across the keeper into the top corner to make the
score 2-0 at 30 minutes. Charlestown then came back into the game creating
pressure but the St Agnes defence under the captaincy of Jainey Curnow
held firm.
The second half saw Charlestown start strongly but St Agnes expended their lead
when Tracey Burley scored a superb individual goal, The game was deservedly
sealed when Tacey again hammered the ball home to made the score 4-0.
A strong all round performance by the St.Agnes Ladies against a Charlestown team
who were without some of their first choice line up players.

Charlestown Ladies 1 Falmouth Town 6
In a fiercely competitive game, Falmouth Town from division one, muscled their
way to what would looked on paper to be a convincing win.
From the whistle both teams exchanged end to end chances, but Charlestown only
broke the deadlock on 28 minutes, a thunder bolt drive form Linden Reynolds. The
pace continued and with half time looming (42 minutes) Charlestown couldn't
clear a corner and from the resultant melee Falmouth somehow bobbled the ball
into the net. That wasn't the end of the action in the first half, as within
minutes Falmouth caught Charlestown on the break, Abbie Pearce made an excellent
initial block but the following up striker just tapped into an open goal.
Falmouth started strongly in the second half and on 52 minutes extended their
lead. Charlestown rallied and matched the visitors with both sides sharing good
chances. However in the final ten minutes fitness and experience began to show
as the game slowly became one way traffic. The final goals came on 83 / 87 /
90+2 minutes.

Charlestown Ladies 2 Holmans 0
(Aggregate 6 - 3)
Charlestown brought a slender one goal advantage into the second leg. Having
observed in minutes silence on remembrance Sunday, against the wind, Holmans
started the brighter of the two teams although they failed to create any clear
cut chances. Charlestown came back into the game and on the half hour Nathalie
Williams broke through the centre and just as she was about to shoot Chantelle
Goldsworthy made a magnificent last gasp tackle. From the resultant corner
Linden Reynolds collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area and powered a
shot high into the top corner of the net to give the Holmans keeper no chance.
In a reverse of the first half Charlestown started much the brighter and should
have extended their lead when Reynolds blasted over from close range. Holmans
came back into the match and built pressure on the Charlestown goal. On 58
minutes they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Charlestown penalty
area. Danni Woodberry chipped the free kick over the wall but it wouldn't
come down in time and grazed the top of the bar. Holmans continued to
press but on 65 minutes Charlestown broke away through Aimee Lafferty and having
run 60 yards and beaten 4 players knocked the ball into the area where Williams
shot over when well placed. Back Holmans came again but it was Charlestown
who extended their lead on 71 minutes when Reynolds was on hand again to tap the
ball into an empty net after a goal mouth scramble. Holmans didn't give up
and continued to press but the Charlestown defence, brilliantly marshalled by
the impressive Stacey Rowe, kept a clean sheet.
This gave an aggregate score of Charlestown 6, Holmans 3.

Charlestown Ladies 12 Wendron Ladies 2
Charlestown started brightly and took the lead on 5 minutes when Charity Trenouth
showed real desire to meet a good cross from Kayleigh Clemes. They
extended their lead on 16 minutes when Wendron failed to clear a corner and
Rhiannon Player slotted the ball home. Linden Reynolds made it 3-0 on 22
minutes. The Wendron keeper took a knock to the head and could not continue and
having already started with only 10 players this meant Wendron had to complete
the game with 9. Nathalie Williams scored a hat trick within only seven
minutes scoring in the 26th, 29th and 33rd minute. Jodie Bray made it 7-0
on 38 minutes with a wonderful 35 yard chip. Two minutes later Trenouth
made it 8-0. Just before half time Wendron pulled one back when Nathalie
Hall's determination and pace took her past the Charlestown defence and she
buried the ball in the corner of the net to give the keeper no chance.
At the start of the second half Trenouth completed her hat trick to make it 9-1.
But Wendron never let their heads drop and Hall added a second on 67
minutes. Charlestown further extended their lead with two quick goals on
80 minutes when first Trenouth and secondly Williams both brought their personal
tally to 4 goals each. Clemes finished the scoring with almost the last
kick of the game to make the final score Charlestown 12 Wendron 2.

Holmans 3 Charlestown Ladies 4
On a glorious afternoon Holmans entertained Charlestown in the first leg of the
Kimmins Cup. Holmans started brightly and scored almost from the kick off
with a Katy Luscombe shot hitting the post and Roxanne Cook being on hand to
score from the rebound. Holmans were two up inside 10 minutes when the
ball was stabbed home after the Charlestown keeper failed to hold onto a
cross. On 15 mins Charlestown replied with a shot from Jodie Bray. Charlestown
were level on 32 mins through Donna Turner. She received the ball on the
edge of the box with her back to goal but after smart control, flick turn and
powerful shot gave the keeper no chance. From the restart Holmans retook
the lead after another excellent run and shot from Luscombe. In the second half
both teams worked hard and created many chances none better than Rhiannon
Player's 25 yard rocket which grazed the outside of the post on 75 mins. But
it wasn't until the 88th minute when the second half scoring started when the
impressive Bray picked up the ball on the right hand side and shot high into the
roof of the net to draw Charlestown level. In the 5th minute of injury
time Charlestown scored the winner through debutante Charity Ternmouth. This
leaves the tie nicely poised for the second leg on the 9th of November.

Charlestown Ladies 2 Callington 0
On a bright and breezy afternoon Charlestown
welcomed Callington for their first visit to Sticker. The game eventually
kicked off 25 minutes later than scheduled due to the late arrival of some
Callington players and kit. Charlestown started brightly with the wind
behind their backs and took the lead after only 8 minutes. Nathalie
Williams picked the ball up on the right and burst through only to see her shot
well saved by the keeper but Donna Turner, following up, drilled the ball into
the net for her first league goal for Charlestown. In the 33rd minute
Charlestown doubled their lead with a mirror image of the first goal. On
this occasion it was Turner who cut in from the left, had her shot well saved
and Williams following up putting the ball into an empty net. On 37
minutes Charlestown were reduced to 10 ladies when Jodie Bray was sent off with
a straight red card.
In the second half, despite having the advantage of the wind and an additional
player Callington were unable to take a grip of the game as Charlestown's mid
field worked relentlessly to pressurise the ball.
Charlestown had the best of the chances created but there were no further
additions to the score.
