On Monday 10th December Lillian Nalis and his wife joined a Ready Steady Cook challenge which was organised by Phil Dingle (Chairman Charlestown Youth Football Club) and Paul Drye (St Austell Brewery). The evening kicked off with the traditional toss of a coin, with the winner picking a mystery bag of ingredients. Plymouth Argyle midfielder Lillian Nalis and chef/patron of Austell’s, Brett Camborne Paynter, paired up as the green team. While Lillian’s wife Paola and Sharksfin chef Pier Palena donned the green aprons... and the battle was on. The greens worked at a frantic pace with Lillian making a very competent assistant, and as it turns out, is quite a foodie. In the red camp things were much more laid back, with Pier and Paola happily chatting away in Italian while preparing some very Mediterranean influenced dishes. After an hour’s cooking time the reds needed just a couple of minutes ‘extra time’ to pull their dishes together. However the greens had timed their soufflé perfectly and were ready for service, but had to wait for the reds. Lillian protested that the soufflés were dropping in the extra minutes, as if objecting to a disallowed goal! Paul Drye who compared the evening, refused to be swayed, and told them to play on! When the final whistle blew both teams had produced three courses for 8 diners and two judges. The greens conjured up a wonderful scallop starter, followed by a smoked chicken dish that wowed the judges. The final flourish being the controversial apple soufflés. The reds with their carefree relaxed approach served up a deliciously simple grilled tomato and goat’s cheese starter, followed by baked pollock over a herb salad with the characterful side dish of pasta. Their dessert of poached pears with a chocolate sauce rounded off the menu perfectly. Those lucky judges had the difficult but enviable task of picking a winner. The starter went to the reds, followed by the main course going to the greens, so it all hung on the dessert... despite Lillian’s earlier soufflé protests, the green’s dessert proved irresistible. The greens had won! A fun evening was had by all. Some members of Charlestown Youth under 16’s and under 14’s girls team ate some great food and met Lillian who answered many questions from the Charlestown players. Pier and Paola talked about home and cooked the food they love, and Brett went home the victor. Lillian proved the perfect role model for the younger generation. He enjoys good food, an active lifestyle and is not afraid of a little washing up! Sir Trevor Brooking lends support to our ambitious plans
Football legend and FA Director of Football Development Sir Trevor Brooking gave his backing to plans for a new home for Charlestown Youth Football Club on Saturday 28th July 2007. The former West Ham and England player visited the club's current home to meet club officials as well as some of the 330 players who are currently members of the club. He was visiting to see and hear about the club's plans to move to a new home at Nanphysick which has planning permission for 4 full-size pitches and 7 mini soccer pitches. He was entertained with a fantastic coaching session involving players ranging from 5 years old to 15 years old and included a display of freestyling skills. Thank you to Ocean Housing Group Ltd for sponsoring the first pitch at Nanphysick. See gallery tab for more photos of the event.
